ABSTRACT

Self-directed learning (SDL) is an important approach for professionals. However, the problem is how to develop SDL and how to address SDL as a learning issue in itself. Learning can be seen as a problem-solving process, where the learner has to analyse the situation, find the possible solutions, and be able to select the most suitable one for each situation (Dewey, 1960). New learning is based on prior learning and, for new learning, the learner needs to reflect on this prior learning. Without reflection, which simply means the ability to think in order to learn something new, learning does not happen.
