First published in Leigh Hunt’s London Journal, II, 21 November 1835, pp. 405–8; see headnote above, pp. 285–7. Hunt and Robert Browning were friends by 1837 (Blunden, 1930, p. 277; cf. Brownings’ Correspondence, vol. iv, p. 25). In 1839 Hunt declared that ‘Browning…came forth a poet stamped at once with his Paracelsus’ (Hunt, Literary, p. 487; see also Luther A. Brewer, Some Lamb and Browning Letters to Leigh Hunt (Cedar Rapids, IA: Torch Press, 1924).
