ABSTRACT
This chapter describes building a team that involves assembling a group of non-like-minded individuals who perceive and process information differently and are willing to share their differing perspectives. Building a team of people does not mean assembling a comfortable group of members who get along well and agree with each other and the boss. Changes to the demographics of the workforce as well as increased globalization broaden the diversity in the pool of available talent. The symptoms of groupthink include: overestimation of the group's power and morality that believes the group is invulnerable and thus unlikely to question possible consequences of their actions; closed-mindedness. Cog's Ladder outlines five stages of development through which teams progress in order to become high performing. The concept is that teams evolve best through each stage after the current stage is completed. The stages include: Polite, Why we're Here, Bid for Power, Constructive, and Esprit.
