ABSTRACT

This chapter joins a growing number of contributions that have sought to highlight the personal and affective bonds that become important to social activism and forms of solidarity. It concerns the labour, resources and connections that go into building solidarities and takes CLN's emphasis on the development of 'coalitions' as its starting point using The Community Leadership Network (CLN). The chapter begins with a space of encounter – a CLN annual general meeting (AGM) – as an introduction to the relationships at the heart of the organization. It prioritizes the efforts that go into achieving social change and focuses specifically on the interpersonal and affective relationships that lie at its heart. The chapter also connects with recent work on solidarity that has concerned the emotional labour, organizational capacities, knowledge, personal commitments and sacrifice that go into building transformative relations of various kinds.
