ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how early years settings and schools can support the notion of community and make it a reality in the lives of young citizens. It explores how early years practitioners can support children in developing a sense of belonging and connectivity. The chapter discusses the value of effective relationships between the home and the setting for demonstrating how children are enabled to make early connections and develop a sense of belonging. It looks at how children can be supported in playing, working and learning together. The chapter introduces ideas for how early years settings can become part of the wider community. It addresses how community cohesion and regeneration can be supported and what this will look like in the lives of young children. The chapter explores the early years curricula of other countries to understand global perspectives on curriculum and citizenship and to respectfully uncover the views and opinions of other cultures.
