ABSTRACT

In addition to hearing and validating clients’ concerns and problems, SBT clinicians are curious about “the better times” when problems are absent or less noticeable in clients’ lives. These occasions of strength and success represent “exceptions” to the problem and serve as building blocks to change in SBT. This chapter describes a three-step method for building on exceptions that involves eliciting exceptions, exploring the conditions under which they occur, and increasing their presence in the lives of clients.
