ABSTRACT

This chapter presents information and ideas on how to build students’ tutor group into a team. Given that the very point of having a tutor group is to make the student feel comfortable, welcomed and known, it follows that they as tutor have to spend time getting to know the students in their care. Adolescents are understandably concerned about their appearance and their status in any group. The theory on team building can be complex, but can be summed up by B. Tuckman and M. B. Jensen who saw stages in how a group comes together as a team. Each of Tuckman’s models involves the group concentrating on their emotional, interpersonal, expressive relationships and those behaviours which are needed to get the task or activity done. To get the group to start interacting and getting to know each other, a more interesting, active way to do this is via paired interviews.
