ABSTRACT

In the death spiral, the target of bullying begins to feel stress of a high magnitude when in the workplace or even when away from the workplace but contemplating returning to the workplace. In the case of workplace bullying, and especially same-gender bullying, the target may not even have a name for what is happening. Ultimately, the prevention of bullying anywhere in an academic institution is about attending to the larger culture and the development of faculty and faculty leadership. Bullying thrives in cultures where covert exercise of power is rewarded rather than rejected. Covert bullying will rarely reach the standard required to suggest the conduct is discriminatory harassment. The bully would be loud and caustic, pompous and rude, and while being his target would be painful, at least one could take refuge in the company of other women.
