This chapter introduces the variety of models currently employed to plan, deliver and operate bike share. A diverse range of business models have emerged to support the global growth of bike share. The chapter aims to provide some general indications of cost associated with the establishment and operation of an urban bike share program. It focuses on docked systems rather than dockless models, because in the majority of cases, the dockless systems do not require a price list, as they are typically offered without direct cost to cities. Bike share capital expenditure consists primarily of the bikes themselves and their associated docking infrastructure and payment kiosks. The sponsorship of bike share brings increased brand awareness to the sponsoring company and may also assist those firms seeking to develop a reputation for sustainable practices and innovation. The operating costs of bike share include fleet redistribution, serving, repair and replacement, as well as customer service costs.
