Every so often a groundbreaking development or invention changes the world in profound and irrevocable ways. We can argue about the definition of ‘progress’, or if something is a ‘good’ or a ‘bad’ thing. But you cannot dispute the tremendous impact of such changes, which affect all aspects of our private and working lives, and have helped to ensure the continued dominance of commerce, trade and industry across the globe.
