ABSTRACT
The state has undergone dramatic demographic changes since brothels became legal. The entire arid western United States between the Rocky Mountains and the coastal ranges has grown three times faster than the national average since the 1990s. Nevada grew 49.5 percent in the 1990s and continued to be the fastest growing state in the country between 2000 and 2007. The entire state, including rural areas, has been affected by an increasingly globalized tourist economy. The largest brothels located near the urban centers of the state suburban brothels. Suburban brothels are located across the county borders near Las Vegas and Reno, usually 30 minutes' to an hour's drive away. Suburban brothels have always been able to capitalize on the millions of tourists coming into the metropolitan resorts of Reno and Las Vegas. Hy Forgeron explained that while rural Nevada is relatively conservative compared to Las Vegas and Reno, brothels are part of the local tradition.
