ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces ten case studies from a wide range of sectors which illustrate a more radical approach to product delivery and shows how these approaches can result in substantial environmental improvements in combination with other benefits for the customer, company. The design of systems and services can create new opportunities for collaboration between functions which have not worked together before. Functional sales, digital music and the One-Time-Video camcorder all provide examples of dematerialisation, where less materials are used to deliver the same level of functionality to the user. The case studies in the chapter have demonstrated that there are a number of benefits to providing systems or services. The most pertinent of these are the increased opportunities for consumer loyalty, increased innovation, the opportunity to retain the value in the product, and the potential for increased positive profile.
