ABSTRACT

[Byron] Don Juan, VI-VIII (1823); John Bull, July 20, 1823, page 229. Samuel Whitbread, Foxite Whig Member of Parliament and Byron’s colleague on the Drury Lane Theatre committee, committed suicide in 1815. Sir Samuel Romilly, lawyer and reform Member of Parliament, killed himself on the death of his wife in 1818. The reviewer is unaware that Byron, having a personal grudge against Romilly, gloated about his suicide, too, even though they had been political allies.
