ABSTRACT

The participants at the first ‘Conferences On A More Democratic United Nations’ (CAMDUN) conference stressed time and again that the coming period will probably be a unique opportunity to democratize the United Nations. Democratic international governance, combined with self-reliant communities and self-administered economies, is the best, if not the only, way of achieving this objective. The international community is already becoming increasingly interdependent. A growing commitment to internationalism is an essential feature of a broadened power base. Many proposals were discussed at the CAMDUN-1 Conference to democratize and revitalize the United Nations. Democratization of the United Nations is necessary for the international governance needed to deal with the major long-term global problems we face. National governments would continue to decide much of United Nations policy but the smallest village would have an opportunity of influencing international affairs.
