ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the process and seeks to determine if there is a place for these methodologies. It is vitally important to understand at an early stage what the data is for, as this will determine a number of the parameters in the capture. Through the use of technology, the opportunity is to accurately capture in minute detail the built heritage around us, to record for the future, develop our knowledge and understanding and use the information to support sustainability. The basic fabric will still need monitoring and interventions but these will be informed and managed through the use of data continuously gathered and analysed autonomously. Greater accuracy is achieved by pulsing the laser at the same point and, after omitting the spurious results, recording the optimum value. The scanners using a spinning mirror were placed in aircraft for ground mapping before terrestrial applications were considered.
