ABSTRACT

Barriers to equality still exist for women's inclusion and advancement in faculty and administrative roles in higher education. Carol Hymowitz and Timothy D. Schellhardt explored barriers for females along their career journey and were among the first researchers to explore the "invisible barrier. This chapter explores a research that exhibits the positive impact of mentors in helping proteges journey past barriers to leadership in academia. While mentors and sponsors provide career navigation support, the delivery, audience, focus, and ultimate result in position attainment may vary. Mentors and proteges are key members of a mentoring relationship who give and receive information along the path of development. Cheris Kramarae and Blake-Beard suggest that individuals should become involved in any types of mentorships that are available to them. Mentors can provide guidance to and be an advocate for female faculty members as they navigate the tenure and promotion process.
