ABSTRACT

In the previous three chapters, chemicals which showed different toxicological properties and were utilized in quite different ways were managed in significantly different fashions. Interestingly, one which is accepted to be a human carcinogen has continued in widespread use while another substance, about which there is doubt concerning its carcinogenicity in any species, has been unavailable due to a ban on its use. Before trying to draw any conclusions about this disparity, it would be profitable to examine the risk assessment and risk management of a fourth compound: benzene.
