ABSTRACT
Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa have been considered to be social disorders, with conversations focused on societal issues, recent findings have pointed to important biological implications related to these disorders. Sarah's bingeing and purging occurred several times per week, a frequency that was more than sufficient to meet Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) criteria for Bulimia Nervosa. Sarah revealed that bingeing and purging had become a cycle for her more than 7 years prior to the meeting with Ms. Chu. Ms. Chu needed to verify the binge-purge cycle, which would not be easy since Sarah had considerable practice in hiding her aberrant eating behavior. Ms. Chu held several sessions between Sarah and her mother to engage in family education. The goals with these sessions were to educate Sarah's mother about the nature of Sarah's illness and the role that family attitudes and comments may play in the development and treatment of the disorder.
