ABSTRACT

This chapter presents four case studies of disasters, namely Natchez Tornado, Goliad Tornado, Tri-state Tornado and MV Dong Fang Zhi Xing. It presents four stages for each case study and explains key issues raised by each case study. The takeaway for all administrators should be the importance of communication with residents during a disaster response situation. The single tornado that hit Natchez is still listed as the second deadliest in US history. In Texas, tornadoes are common and cities in tornado zones should have an emergency action plan to contend with sheltering residents, obtaining resources from other entities, as well as having an effective communication plan. Government agencies with limited resources should forge agreements and alliances with other surrounding organizations that can be called upon to provide support in times of crisis. Ships can be vulnerable to tornadoes, wind storms and hurricanes since they are unprotected when in open water.
