ABSTRACT

The case study is one of the most common methodologies in planning scholarship; in particular using specific places (regions, cities, neighbourhoods) as case examples. However, as a methodology it can be confusing. Firstly, it is not clearly associated with particular techniques. Secondly, and especially in applied planning research, it can be difficult to identify the broader significance of a project oriented to shaping policy in particular places – for example as support to a local government – to a wider application. This chapter untangles these issues, and goes on to discuss various types of case study methodologies. It concludes with some guidance as to what to cover in carrying out and reporting a case study.
