ABSTRACT
The two central contentions of Butler’s ethics are that virtue consists in following nature, and that conscience is supreme. It is important to understand the nature of these doctrines, and of their relationship, before judging the criticisms that have been made of his position. I begin by stating briefly some of the relevant points of interpretation that have emerged so far.
