ABSTRACT

Cause, mechanism, and manner of death are sometimes redundant or confusing as written on a death certificate. When information is erroneously recorded, reviewers for a State Office of Vital Statistics refer the death certificate to the ME/coroner for reissue prior to burial or cremation. Precise identification of cause, mechanism, and manner of death is also required as it relates to liability issues and insurance claims. Attention to the definitions of cause, mechanism, and manner of death assists in completion and interpretation of death certificates.
