ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 turns to the photographs of the centre. It argues that many of these images should not be interpreted as neutral sources telling us about everyday life in the building. Instead, it demonstrates that most published photos were in fact carefully chosen and distributed because they conveyed a sense of the biological functions governing the growth of the centre-community. Similarly, a documentary film by Paul Rotha on the Pioneer Health Centre is analysed: The Centre (1948) tells a highly suggestive story which was heavily influenced by the medical directors.
