ABSTRACT

The distribution of Ceratias couesi, Ceratias holboelli, and Ceratias uranoscopus include all 3 oceans between 63 N and 43 S.C. holboelli have been found been captured between approx. 150 and 3400 m, with the majority of specimens captured between 400 and 2000 m. C. couesi have been captured between 75 and 4000 m, with a majority of specimens taken between 500 and 1250 m (Pietsch 1986). Like Himantolophus, larvae of C. couesi are epipelagic living in less than 50 m depth. During metamorphosis they descend to depths of more than 800 m. Post metamorphosis the mature males remain in meso-and bathypelagic depths most common below 1000 m; while females return to lesser depths (Bertelsen 1951, Bertelsen & Krefft 1988).
