ABSTRACT

Emerging markets like India, primarily due to their rapid economic development and availability of cheap resources, on the one hand offer immense opportunities for businesses to flourish but on the other hand pose massive challenges regarding how best to manage them. Observing the growing global significance of Indian markets, it is important to understand the nature and kind of management systems relevant to the Indian context. This chapter explores sector-specific human resource management (HRM), and highlights the emerging HRM systems in both multinational companies and business process outsourcing firms operating in India. It discusses the topic of talent management which is very timely for the Indian context given the rapid economic development and the issues related to both skills shortages and retention of talent. The intention of both human resource practitioners and researchers should be to continuously develop, test and re-test constructs suitable for conducting research and develop relevant practice in the Indian context.
