ABSTRACT

There is no doubt that Brazil is a land of contrasts. It has been amply demonstrated in the chapters of this book that during the 1990s and the 2000s the country has been the subject of significant social, political, economic and environmental transformations. With respect to tourism, there are a variety of built and natural tourism landscapes, a large number of destinations at various stages of evolution, a multiplicity of stakeholders, and a diversity of issues and the challenges discussed in the chapters of this book. Underpinning many of these chapters there is also the subtext of government involvement in tourism, and the awakening and varied attempts by all levels of government to harness the potential benefits of tourism and manage its negative impacts.
