ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines some of the current challenges being faced in Professional Military Ethics Education (PMEE) delivery, focusing on the experience of the UK. Every professional military around the world is supposed to fulfil its international obligations and ensure that the Law of Armed Conflict is taught and refreshed each year to all serving military personnel, both in peacetime and in wartime. The range of contemporary challenges to traditional ways of thinking about military ethics is broad and getting broader, not just for the UK but for all military forces around the world. At the in bello level, professional military personnel must know how to apply discrimination in their actions. Just as the ethical landscape of warfare is changing, so too is the landscape within which military ethics will need to be taught in the UK. Distance learning is a relatively new area for the UK military, but one which is attracting increased attention and resources.
