ABSTRACT

Implementing SBT often requires significant perceptual and behavioral changes on the part of mental health practitioners and agencies. This chapter describes four common challenges faced by practitioners who shift from deficit-based approaches to SBT, along with suggestions for addressing each challenge. Challenges include acknowledging clients’ strengths and struggles, being client directed vs. passive, linking strengths to outcomes, and being patient throughout one’s journey toward becoming strengths based.
