ABSTRACT
Given the premise that structures represent need-satisfying patterns of interaction, there should exist a preference function for the use or non-use of each particular channel. This conceptual preference varies with the individual, the overall network of which the channel is part, the performance of the group, the type of incentives and costs and can change during the group’s life history. The benefits included money costs for channel usage, time costs for channel usage, bonuses to encourage more direct access. Different channel charges are used for different groups. Plotting average percentage of available channels rented on the abscissa and cost of channel in dollars on the ordinate. The channel rental cost is in minutes of psychology credits. The channel renting procedure used is the same as those used in the Berkeley channel renting experiments except the channel charges are in psychology credit minutes. Renting six channels at five minutes only gives a subject a chance to break even.
