ABSTRACT

Forfeitures and seizures by government entities have been in existence since the American Revolution. England and the American Colonies have used forfeitures to enforce customs and revenue laws, and they are still used today in England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. During the twenty-šrst century, forfeiture and seizure laws have been expanded to encompass crimes, including drug tra¦cking and other “whitecollar” crimes. Forfeitures are used in both civil and criminal cases, and today, they are used to deprive criminals of their illegal gains.
