ABSTRACT

Cross-linking is the most well-known radiation effect on polymers in industrial applications such asmanufactureofrubbertireandcoveredelectricwire.Inthecaseofrubbertire,thecross-linking increasesthemechanicalstrengthandreducesthetackstrengthaspre-cross-linking.Electricwire coveredwithpolyethyleneandpolyvinylchloridecanbeimprovedintermsofthermalresistance. Thereisalinearrelationshipbetweensuchradiationeffectsanddose.Aftercross-linking,viscosity, molecular weight, and branching increase with the degree of resulting cross-linking and these phenomena are induced by a strong interaction of polymer chains.
