ABSTRACT

To sustain the metaphor of the football match, the teacher is really confronted with an ‘away’ fixture when he or she decides to attempt home-visiting; the final foray into parental education, it reaches into the very heart of the child’s social milieu and can easily be misinterpreted as a gross intervention into private life. The parent is at home and there is a good chance of a totally relaxed atmosphere in which the most convincing teacher-parent dialogue may be attempted. More than all other home-school enterprises, this is the one requiring most delicate handling. An approach is to travel round parental residences with news of some extra-special school occasion, delivering a form of personal invitation. Few schools will enjoy the luxury of an educational visitor to organise the main sector of home-school relations and to undertake the home-visiting, but others may feel it profitable to release a teacher for a goodly proportion of time.
