ABSTRACT
This chapter is intended as a reflection on how best to approach patients and on how to encourage trust and hope in the analytic encounter. It deals with the effects of interpretation and the way the characters and narrations of the sessions provide us with extremely valuable signals that enable us to modulate our interventions. This presupposes that characters and narrations are regarded as events of the relational here and now and not merely as derivatives of the individual patient’s history and internal world.
