ABSTRACT

This chapter builds on Max Weber to analyze charisma in Latin American politics from the 1930s to the present. The chapter is divided into six sections that focus on what in my criteria are relevant aspects of charisma: the redemptive mission of the leader, charisma and myths, the charisma of rhetoric, the body of the leader, the body of the people, and charisma and democracy. In each section a definitional characteristic of charisma is illustrated with historical examples.
