ABSTRACT
This chapter highlights approaches and practices that show promise in interrupting the cycle of class inequality in higher education. It expresses that the misconception is at the root of many challenges faced by low-income students on college campuses. Many universities provide enriching cultural opportunities and help students with practical matters like housing and food. This idea of a critical education has been a central part of liberation movements led by people of color, women, LGBT, immigrant, disabled, and other marginalized groups. Students and faculty continue to advocate for inclusive curricula relevant to a truly diverse academic community. Teaching all students about the contributions of working-class intellectuals is an important function of higher education institutions' educational mission. A crucial part of increasing visibility around class must include a counter-narrative to the notion of higher education as a place created by and for only the wealthy.
