ABSTRACT

The Charter movement is the natural child of Czechoslovak real socialism. Unfortunately, that forced alliance between the powers that be and the powerless did not produce a child conceived in love: it is the product of a rape. The regime refused to acknowledge its paternity and branded ‘failures and self-appointees’ on the unloved child’s forehead. This mark, however, cannot hide the obvious family resemblance; it merely reveals the conditions under which the child was produced.
