ABSTRACT

Although Chinese ethnic media journalists have long been ignored in both media and ethnic studies, they are an organic part of the Chinese-American community, which has existed since the 1850s. In recent years, the power and influence of the contemporary Chinese ethnic media have increased, which affects scholarly attention to journalists at these outlets and their roles in local communities, as well as the globalized multiethnic society. Based on interviews with Chinese ethnic media journalists in Boston, this chapter examines who these journalists are and investigates what roles they play in local news coverage. It reveals many factors, including their education, professional training, language proficiency, and beliefs, especially their attitudes toward community, which has some correlation with their immigration status, all with influence on their professional actions and local news coverage.
