ABSTRACT

(a) Francis Atterbury (1662–1732), Bishop of Rochester, extracts from a letter to Pope, 12 September 1718, Corresp., i. 502–4. Pope sent Atterbury a twelve-line version of the Epitaph on 3 September for his ‘opinion both as to the doctrine and to the poetry’, and followed his advice by omitting a couplet before it was carved on a memorial tablet placed on the outside wall of the church.
