ABSTRACT
Roman tiles, coins, and inscriptions have been found periodically for centuries, but only the extent of Roman involvement in the area begun to be understood. Like many other places in England, the city of Chichester and the neighboring village of Fishbourne rest upon the rubble of the Roman Empire. The adjacent village of Fishbourne was the site of the Roman port and the Fishbourne Palace, Roman-era dwelling. The territory along the southern coast occupied by the Atre-bates answered very well; the Romans built their port facilities and storehouses where the village of Fishbourne stands and placed the camps for the legions and their auxiliaries to the east, at the site of Chichester. A new network of forts and communication roads had been constructed further inland, and the supply post at Fishbourne and the base camp were no longer needed. At Fishbourne there were dramatic changes that may well have been due to the comfortable position of the Roman favorite Cogidubnus.
