ABSTRACT
The association of multiple cases of alcoholism and drug abuse within the same family group has been known since the beginning of recorded history. Critical studies since the 1950s have dissected the relative contributions of environment, role models, and genetics, particularly in alcoholism. In this chapter we present some of the seminal information relating to the identification of children of addicts, particularly male children, as those at the highest risk for future addiction.
