ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Meredith Cooper and Melissa Hicks share their combined years of clinical and hospital experience as child life specialists working creatively and energetically with cancer directly affecting the child, her sibling, and/or the parent in ways that utilize play and draw upon resilience. They explore the developmental understanding and impact of cancer on children that is used to inform interventions that are developmentally appropriate, supportive, and play oriented, with special consideration to situations in which either the child himself has cancer or a sibling or parent is diagnosed with cancer.
