ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the enormous economic growth of modern-day China and its impact on trade, investment, and other ties to the United States (US). It explains the points of disagreement between China and the United States in the areas of human rights, currency valuation, military expansion, and product safety issues. The chapter presents the future challenges for the United States as it interacts with China, an economic powerhouse and potential military competitor. The rise of China has sparked contentious debate across America. Policymakers, pundits, intellectuals, and citizens differ in their opinions about the direction of US–China policy as some favor confrontation and others favor engagement. In many respects, Americans' perceptions of China's behavior and intentions shape the policies they wish to see implemented. Some view China as an aggressive power that seeks to challenge the Unites States, both economically and militarily.
