ABSTRACT

About twenty-five years ago, when I was on the staff of a psychiatric clinic, a young Chinese-American woman was assigned to me. I sensed she was reticent and unhappy about something that had to do with me. She eventually told me that upon hearing she had a Chinese therapist, her sisters reacted: "You have a Chinese WHAT?!" Implied in their disbelief was that she was given a second-class therapist.
