ABSTRACT

In an exam you are given a choice of titles so that you can make the most of your particular areas of expertise by selecting titles that suit your own interests and the topics that you have studied most carefully. In coursework there are other reasons for giving you a choice. For example, you may be using your assignment as a way of learning about a topic that you didn’t previously know much about. That would not be wise in an exam, but in coursework it can make sense. So the first thing to think about when choosing which essay to attempt is your purpose in doing the assignment. Are you just out to get the best possible mark, or will other considerations affect your choice of topic? We’ll come back to this in a minute, but first you need to check just what choice you really have.
