ABSTRACT
This collection of essays arises from a conference held in Heidelberg during June 2003 and organised by the Institute of Philosophy at Karlsruhe University. All of the contributions have been substantially revised, and in fact more than half of them then translated into German. This is itself a matter requiring some discussion, although it is also worth noting here that Christel Fricke, who now teaches (in English) at the University of Oslo, managed to secure from this institution a publication subsidy for the book when German sources proved unforthcoming: so that the Norwegians have subsidised the publication in German of commentary on a writer in English.
