ABSTRACT
My friend and colleague Professor David Jacoby always exhibited a meticulous approach to the study of details, including the examination of specific micro- phenomena, which are so important for the reconstruction and comprehension of historical events in their wider scope. I therefore ventured to offer for his Festschrift this small sketch concerning the history of navigation.
