ABSTRACT

This chapter will examine some of the alternative strategies for welfare put forward both by elements of the post-industrial Left such as Gorz (1994) and others such as Atkinson (1995) who share the aspiration to reform the welfare state but suggest different policy proposals. There are three main questions for post-industrial socialists which arise from the problems with welfare capitalism and the suggested alternatives to it that have been outlined already:

• What might the features of post-industrial socialist social policy look like given the critique of more traditional approaches?
