ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the life and contributions of Clara Thompson, a remarkable woman who was primarily responsible for bringing the work of Sándor Ferenczi, a major icon in psychoanalytic thinking today, to America. In spite of her dedication to this task, she has been all but forgotten. How and why this occurred is described through the lens of projective identification and other mechanisms that have propagated the minimization of her dedication to teaching and writing. Her straightforward manner and ability to tell the truth have also been impugned by others who have sought to discredit her reputation, actions that resonate with some of today’s major political debates in America.
