ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the practical implementation of the inclusion agenda in mainstream primary schools in England. It also focuses on current practice and link to relevant historical developments that have influenced the way people practically implement inclusion today. The chapter describes the complexity in defining ‘inclusion’ and how historical changes have influenced the purpose of inclusion over time. It considers the agenda in its broadest sense to mean the inclusion of all mainstream pupils. The chapter then outlines how inclusion works in practice, including leadership and management strategies. It also describes a need to move away from traditional interpretations of leadership associated with specific posts and see leadership as the responsibility of every teacher, with practice transformed by shared ownership, a willingness to try different approaches and valuing diversity. The chapter explores some of the additional barriers to implementing inclusion, including the dominance of the standards agenda.
