ABSTRACT

Hintze’s work has been more overlooked, at least outside the German university milieu (Gilbert 1975), although Barrington Moore (1991[1966], 415), in his renowned Social Origins of Dictatorship and Democracy (to which we will return in Chapter 6), builds on Hintze in a short passage on feudalism. But Hintze has enjoyed a renaissance in recent decades. Some of his important works were translated into English in 1975, and in 1985 Theda Skocpol introduced her attempt to bring the state back in with special emphasis on Hintze’s earlier contribution (see Chapter 8). Likewise, Thomas Ertman draws extensively on Hintze in his book Birth of the Leviathan from 1997 (which we return to in Chapter 9).
